Dial-up Networking

These instructions will enable you to configure your computer's internet connection using the Windows '95, Windows '98 native Dial-up networking connectoid. These instructions assume that you have successfully completed any signup procedures and possess an active account.

Setting up an Internet connection is an easy two-fold operation. It should take you less than 10 minutes to get up and surfing. First you need to set up your TCP/IP stack and secondly, you will need to create a Dial-up networking connection.

Setting up TCP/IP

Please follow these instructions to set up your TCP/IP stack:

  1. Open up your Control Panel by clicking on Start >> Settings.
  2. You should see a Network icon, double-click it.
  3. Your network window may or may not have as many items as in the screenshot below. If you already have TCP/IP and Dial-up Adapter, skip ahead to configuring Dial-up networking.
  4. The first thing you'll need to do is add Dial-up adapter, so click on Add >> Adapter.
  5. Select Microsoft on the left and then Dial-up Adapter on the right.
  6. Click OK and you will see some new items in the window but you'll still need to add TCP/IP.
  7. Click on Add >> Protocols.
  8. Select Microsoft on the left and then select TCP/IP on the right.
  9. After you click on OK, all the required components will be installed. All you need to do now is configure them.

Configuring Dial-up networking

Technically, you should have gotten a new Dial-up networking icon when you went through the sign-up procedure. Here's how to create a new connection in case you need to create the icon yourself.

    2. Go to Add/Remove programs.
    3. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
    4. Double-Click on Communications. (Or select it, then click on Details)
    5. Put a checkmark besides Dial-Up Networking.
    6. Click on Ok.
  2. Double-click on Make New Connection, then you'll be prompted for some information.
  3. For "Type a name for the computer you are dialing", type in .
  4. Your modem should already be displayed in "Select a device". If it isn't , select it.
  5. Click Next.
  6. In "Type the phone number for the computer you want to call", type the area code and access number for the connection. (Do not type your phone number here.)
  7. For Country code, select United States(1).
  8. Click Next. Then Finish . You will see a new connection icon called . Double-click on it to connect.
  9. You're done! Your internet connection will be up and running as soon as you doubleclick on your icon.
